Springtime is upon us, and that means several things.
Pollen? Check. We’ve been sneezing at least fifteen times an hour.
Airstream cleaning? Check. We recently pressure washed the old gal. She’s now shining in the sun like a gigantic loaf of silver sour dough. This time around, thankfully, Sean managed to avoid pressure washing his foot.
Facebook page rebooting? Check! In the spirit of spring cleaning, we’re launching a new “Long Long Honeymoon” Facebook page. It makes a lot of sense. When we’re traveling (and even when we’re not), Facebook makes it super easy to keep everyone in the loop.
Our new page will feature conversation, photos, video, and FREE STUFF. Note that we’ll be posting video and photos on Facebook that won’t be found anywhere else. We have approximately one googleplexzilliontrillion video clips and photos that we have collected over the years. At least a few of these gems will be making their way onto our new page. Check it out!
You can find it here: http://Facebook.com/LongLongHoneymoon
Our goal will be to engage everyone with tales of travel… to inform, educate, and entertain… and yes, to shamelessly bribe you with loads of free goodies that pertain to Airstream / RV camping and generally having a good time.
You’ll note that we are sporting a spiffy new logo. A new logo means new products. We will soon be ramping up several weekly contests and giveaways on our Facebook page, including Long Long Honeymoon DVDs, t-shirts, and books.
So why not head on over to Facebook and join the fun?
We recently returned from a walkabout in the U.S. Virgin Islands. As you might have guessed, we didn’t take our Airstream. (I’m still trying to figure out how to cross oceans with the thing.) Although we weren’t exactly camping, we did visit a beautiful national park – the U.S. Virgin Islands National Park on the [...]
In many respects, tools are what separate human beings from the lower animals. (Tools, and micro fleece. Believe me, if they had access to it, other animals would also be wearing micro fleece.) Sure, opposable digits are nice, but many animals have thumbs. Few gorillas, on the other hand, have pressure washers. The love between [...]
For those of us who like to travel, e-readers are a revolution. Now we can carry an entire library’s worth of books in one easily portable package. No more cramming books into every corner of the camper! Quite simply, e-readers deliver an enjoyable reading experience combined with a compact, lightweight package. My wife has a [...]
A few years ago, when decorating our tree we put together a “video Christmas card” and emailed it to friends. We’ve done several over the years, usually consisting of some sort of sloppy timelapse in which I drink a lot of whiskey-laden eggnog. I guess it’s become a tradition. So here’s this year’s “video card” [...]
We’re currently on a walkabout in Europe, after completing a transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2. We have visited England, Greece, & Turkey on this trip. Next week we head home, again on the big ship. Here are a few pics from the Eastbound crossing.
With the recent switch to digital broadcast signals and the dropping price of HDTV sets, many of us are upgrading our RV media centers. In our Airstream, we have two HDTVs: one in the main living area, and one in the bedroom. The best cable connection for HDTV sets is called HDMI. These cables deliver [...]
To paraphrase Sinatra, “Dumb mistakes? I’ve made a few.” Yes, throughout the course of our travels, I’ve made my share of dumb mistakes. Of course, what I’m referring to are more accurately described as careless mistakes. A dumb mistake is something you might make on an IQ test. A careless mistake is far more common [...]
Let’s face it: the current economy is one giant financial dump station. How bad is it? I’m thinking about moving most of my investments away from the stock market and toward canned food items and ammunition. We might even bury our Airstream in the backyard and start using it as an apocalypse shelter. Okay, things [...]
I’m not much of a “festival” kind of guy. As I’ve written before in this space — believe it or not — I’m an introvert. For me, true bliss is not likely found in NYC. It’s found in BFE. You can have Manhattan. I’ll take camping in the mountains of Wyoming where we’re surrounded by [...]
Hitching is among the most fundamental tasks related to Airstream camping. It’s the first thing they teach you. Rather, it’s the first thing they WOULD teach you, if anyone was teaching you at all. If you’re like me, you learned by doing. #162 Unboxing the Swift Hitch Cam from Sean Michael on Vimeo. Typically hitching [...]
Jackson Center, Ohio – Today Airstream announced that it will launch a new line of travel trailers inspired by the legendary “Squarestream” models of the 1980s. These new travel trailers will be dubbed the “Brickstream” line. All Brickstream trailers will be square, rather than round, in appearance. Furthermore, these models eschew the use of traditional [...]
While on the road promoting my novel The Lost Spyder, Kristy and I attended a vintage car show in Rosemary Beach, Florida. In fact, we did more than simply attend this car show – we served as judges, giving each vehicle the “white glove and electron microscope” treatment. We gave awards for best paint, best [...]
One of the reasons we camp is to get closer to nature. But in this instance, “nature” just happened to be getting closer to us. And even though it was a couple hundred thousand miles away, it was still quite spectacular. Every once in a while, the wonders of the universe remind us that we [...]
As I roll out my first novel, The Lost Spyder, I’m sure that a few readers of our Long Long Honeymoon blog are scratching their heads. This particular mystery/suspense novel begs the question: “Sean, what are you thinking – just what the hell does Porsche have to do with camping!?” That’s a fair question. And [...]
When I was a wee lad, I daydreamed about owning a boat. I didn’t care so much about owning a speed or leisure boat, but rather a larger ocean-going vessel equipped with all sorts of creature comforts – a cozy bedroom, a spacious living room, a comfy couch. For some reason, I’ve always wanted to [...]
“Hey dude, what kind of camera do you use?” I get this question from time to time. The honest answer is that I use more than one camera. You need different tools for different jobs. My cameras range from the point-and-shoot Panasonic TS1, to the ultra compact GoPro HD, to the Panasonic TM700 camcorder, to [...]
Reading and camping go together quite well. There are few things in life more satisfying than an engaging story, well told, after dark. One of Kristy’s favorite evening pastimes is to settle down with a good book. (That’s usually when I’m editing video.) This year, one of her marquee Christmas gifts was a Nook e-reader [...]
Severe weather and camping go together like ice cream and motor oil. Okay, that’s a pretty horrible analogy, but I’m trying to emphasize that RVs and emergency weather are not a good combination. It’s obvious but it bears repeating. After a while, we tend to treat our “homes on wheels” as homes, and technically they [...]
When we travel in our Airstream, we often reference the philosophy of “less is more.” You know, sometimes bigger is not necessarily better. Indeed, one reason we camp is to purposefully experience a simpler life. Here’s an unlikely “less is more” tale that’s somewhat documented in our Christmas card video. Best $10 we spent this [...]
What’s that burning smell? A propane leak? No, it’s chestnuts roasting on an open campfire. But I digress. It’s the holiday season. If you’re like me, you’ve still got gifts yet to purchase. That’s where we come in. By popular demand, you can now give the gift that keeps on giving: LONG LONG HONEYMOON on [...]
“When things go wrong, the adventure begins!” Someone emailed me this expression. I’ve found it quite useful. In the early days of our road tripping travels, my attitude was not quite so chipper. I recall a couple of Airstream-related temper tantrums. When our best laid plans took a turn for the worse, we shut off [...]
In our home state of Alabama, the most popular spectator sport is college football. The passion and intensity with which this sport is followed can hardly be exaggerated. It’s kind of like England and soccer, only without all the hooligans and riots. Or at least without the riots. (More on this point below.) At first [...]
Suppose you had an extra couple of billion dollars in your bank account that you wanted to give back to your community. What would you do with it? Here in the United States, you could just cut a check to each individual resident. It would be one hell of an automatic bill pay. Assuming we [...]
You’ve got mail — or do you? If you take the plunge and become a FULL-TIME occupant of your RV, life goes on. It still rains, snows, sleets, and hails. (And in our case, it now also leaks.) You still need to receive mail from time to time. Of course you can always keep a [...]
Less is more. The old axiom “less is more” applies to many facets of life. Sure, there are a few notable exceptions. I think we all agree that when it comes to money, more is more. It’s pretty rare that individuals, corporations, or the government demand less money. The phrase “Give me my salary reduction!” [...]
Let’s get one thing out of the way: I’m not much of a photographer. Oh, I own some cool cameras and carry around a sack full of Nikon lenses. But my still photography skills are limited. I’m more of a video guy. Hand me your cellphone, and I’ll shoot a feature! Proper photography challenges a [...]
Here’s a brief update from the road — specifically, from gorgeous Grand Teton National Park. I’m in LOVE with our current campsite. This is the finest camping locale we’ve enjoyed all year. We are surrounded by wilderness. We have a tremendous view of some of the most beautiful mountains in North America while LYING IN [...]
Here ya go folks. Fresh new post from the hardest workin’ man in the bloggin’ business! Sure, I don’t post as often as some. But hey, who else gives ya a FRICKIN’ TV SHOW in their blog? (Oh, I guess Diablo Cody does — in RED BAND TRAILER. Anyway…) You must agree that this is [...]
This video clocks in a little longer than our usual fare. I can’t determine what the ideal length might be for an Internet video. For some people, the shorter the better. (For you short attention span people, our shortest video on YouTube is about 9 seconds long.) Other people tell me they want longer videos. [...]
Our visit to Amish country sent us back a few hundred years. While not quite the Wacky Wayback Machine of Amish land, Mackinac Island rolled the clock back at least a century or so. Mackinac Island is a charming tourist destination that’s distinguished by what it DOESN’T have: motorized vehicles. It’s also a quaint little [...]
Several years ago, my brother and his family lived in Detroit. I thus visited the Motor City many times. While we spent much of our time just hangin’ out in the suburbs, we also explored vast expanses of urban sprawl for which Detroit is famous (and/or infamous). Thereafter, whenever someone mentioned “Michigan,” my brain conjured [...]
Okay, this is a weird one. The Amish pose a compelling conundrum for a travel blog. We travel types are motivated to explore. Not unlike Captain Kirk, we seek out new life and new civilizations. Most of us embrace modern technology along the way (yes, you can have my iPhone 4… when you pry it [...]
It takes all kinds to make the Airstream / RV camping world go ’round. Over the course of our travels, we’ve met the gamut. From young families with kids, to retired married couples, to solo travelers. Some folks just camp on weekends. Others go at it full time. Falling in the latter category (aka “fulltimers”) [...]
As we haul our Airstream throughout North America, we often spotlight camping destinations along the way. But how about the PEOPLE we meet? Cities and parks are nice and all, but people are unforgettable. RV campers are generally a warm and friendly lot. We were stopped in a West Virginia Walmart parking lot when a [...]
Alumapalooza is a gathering of Airstream enthusiasts. It’s unique because it takes place on factory property in Jackson Center, Ohio. We camp right behind the building where our Airstream was built. Camping at Airstream has many upsides. While at the factory, we took advantage of the excellent Airstream Service center. Our Airstream “Liv” got new [...]
Pressure washing — an addictive activity? It’s definitely dangerous, as you see in the video. But in addition to splitting human skin, will it split aluminum seams? Overall, my approach is moderation in all things, including moderation. We have owned our Airstream for several years, and this is the first time we’ve chosen to pressure [...]
For those of you who think I don’t know jack about RV repair, I finally have a video to prove you wrong. In the past you’ve heard me bemoan the fragility of our power jack. The sacrificial part in question is a little nylon gear. This gear works fine for the most part, but if [...]
One of the great upsides of Airstream ownership, in my opinion, is the product’s longevity. Airstreams are not disposable. Over 70% of all Airstream travel trailers ever built (going back to the 1930s) are still in use today. So if you are a “buy and hold” type like myself, it’s a natural fit. In all [...]
I know, I know — our website offers “tips and information for Airstream / RV travelers.” SO HERE’S TODAY’S TIP: support your local musicians! Honestly, I get more enjoyment from local independent musicians than the glossy pre-packaged fluff that record companies attempt to shove down our throats. I’d rather see a really talented solo artist [...]
Here in America, we like to toss around the word “freedom” a lot. We supposedly live in “the land of the free.” In reality, we live in the land of the taxed and regulated — but that’s not such a catchy phrase. Case in point: Maryland has BANNED ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION in state park campgrounds. No [...]
Hello, blog! Yes, I’m aware that’s a strange way to address one’s blog. But is it really any more bizarre than Good Morning America? And does anyone remember that old McLean Stevenson sit-com called Hello, Larry? Not the catchiest TV jingle, but hey — at least they HAD a jingle. I’d love to have a [...]
Here on LongLongHoneymoon.com, we like to consider the plethora of ways in which people use their RVs. While the most obvious may be old fashioned campin’ in a campground, RVs (and especially Airstreams) tend to crop up in unusual places. We’ve seen Airstreams used as modern art, juice bars, BBQ joints, rooftop penthouse apartments, pool [...]
What is Alumapalooza, you ask? It’s a big gathering of Airstream enthusiasts, and it’s being held June 1-6 at the motherland in Jackson Center, Ohio. Kristy and I are not only slated to ATTEND Alumapalooza, we’ll also be speaking! So if you want to see my ugly mug in person, Alumapalooza will offer a fine [...]
One of the most intimidating tasks awaiting any new towable RV owner is backing into a campsite. The process is counter-intuitive. When traveling in reverse, you’ll find that the trailer responds to steering inputs in a fashion that’s completely opposite to what you expect. Sometimes back-in campsites can be narrow, and require the type of [...]
Here’s a short film I made about one of our favorite artists. Justin Gaffrey creates art in Blue Mountain Beach, Florida. We’ve camped in this area more times than we can count. We love it so much, we made it our home away from home. When Walkabout Production Group isn’t roaming on a walkabout, we [...]
Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink ; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink. Samuel Taylor Coleridge Rime of the Ancient RVer Mariner Water — it does a body good. For the moment, our Long Long Honeymoon is veering into edumacational territory. It strikes me that the gigantic edumacational [...]
A week or so ago, I asked my Twitter friends for topic suggestions. Someone (yes, I’m referring to you JJohnston1975) suggested integrating “creature comforts” and the spa experience with RVing. Personally, I’ve been wanting to do a blog about sleep for a long time. So these two topics dovetail in this LongLongHoneymoon.com entry. I’m a [...]
When we first started blogging, the original plan was to simply to keep friends and family in the loop. Our posts were snapshots and text. Then we began uploading the occasional short video to YouTube. This quickly morphed into regular YouTube uploads from the road. At times, the video obsession led to much gnashing of [...]
Confession: I find RV floor plans strangely fascinating. Okay, “fascinating” may be a stretch. I mean, I don’t sit around all day dreaming about floor plans. But it’s quite remarkable how many different combinations manufacturers create. I’ve likened RV floor plans to Mexican food entrees — the chef always starts with the SAME BASIC INGREDIENTS (meat, [...]
