The LLS

Because life should be a long long honeymoon…

Before we embarked on our Long Long Honeymoon, my bride-to-be Kristy was employed full-time by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Kristy’s primary duties concerned her chapter’s Pennies for Patients program. Much of her time was devoted to interacting with schools across our state, conducting educational assemblies, and raising money for patients via the donation of spare change. Sometimes I would tag along on her journeys, camera in hand. You’ll see one such event in our video.

Speaking in public is one thing; try speaking in public to a packed auditorium of kids! Needless to say, children can be a tough crowd. But Kristy handled the task with aplomb.

If I may boast about my wife, she won the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s national award for the largest percentage increase in the United States with regard to her program. She pretty much quadrupled the amount her chapter raised via Pennies for Patients in one year. I was very proud of her achievements.

But alas, it’s impossible to maintain that job and live the lifestyle we have chosen. I stole her away for our Long Long Honeymoon. Although Kristy left her job at the LLS, we didn’t forget the friendships made and lessons learned.

Working with an organization like the LLS provides perspective, and you soon begin to realize how lucky you have it. Feeling sorry for yourself? Think you’ve got it tough? Try telling that to a child who’s been diagnosed with a blood cancer.

The Leukemia Society is different from many charities in that a large percentage of money raised is transferred to patients who are battling blood cancers. Yes, research is also funded. But a lot of money goes straight to helping those who need it, right now.

There are several excellent fund raising programs offered by the LLS. We encourage you to check out the charity’s website LLS.org for more information.
