Ever wanted to peek inside our 25-foot Airstream travel trailer? Now’s your chance!

Recently we stopped to visit with the folks at Dixie RV Superstores in Hammond, Louisiana where we produced this video walkthrough of our Airstream – which we sometimes call “Liv.” We’ve taken her to 49 states and she’s still going strong.

On the outside, Liv looks pretty good. You can’t take an Airstream to 49 states without suffering a little wear and tear. She’s sporting a few dings and dents on her exterior. But we like to think of those minor flaws as “character marks.”

Up front, her gravel guards are pocked and nicked from the impact of a zillion tiny pebbles. But isn’t that what gravel guards are for?

Liv’s rear storage compartment is rusted out, and was further damaged due to a tire blowout. Every time I look at it, I hear the soft music of Elvis crooning, “In the Ghetto.” The same hold true for the water access compartment on the opposite side of the trailer – it has rusted due to the factory using metal that’s vulnerable to oxidation (instead of stainless steel or the like). We will eventually repair those areas.

But on the inside, Liv’s never looked better. When we bought our Airstream, it came complete with the standard Airstream interior in Classic trim. The good news about Classic finishing is the use of quality oak cabinetry and Corian countertop surfaces. The bad news? It’s a little on the bland side, and we’re not thrilled with the fake wood that’s sprinkled throughout alongside the real deal oak. So we’re slowly transmogrifying her interior from old school stodgy to new school hip, or at least hipper than a 1980s log cabin.

At the moment we’re proud of Liv’s new floor, a lovely hardwood laminate called Pergo. It looks better and is easier to keep clean than the carpet we had for years. The floor install was completed by Vinnie’s Northbay Airstream Repair in Novato, California. Vinnie did a bang up job laying down a new floor! It was a major project, one that required the removal of the couch, desk, and bed. Kristy’s father Harry finished out the final quarter round trim.

In the near future, we plan to further upgrade the interior with some choice new fabric selections. We’re thinking we’ll go for fresh window valences and a recovered couch. We may also replace the bits of pseudo wood that came standard from the factory. We’ll place some fresh artwork on the walls. Eventually we’ll get Liv’s interior where we want it.
