The first glimmer of Spring is in the chilly air. Sure, much of North America remains an icy frozen tundra, but a quick glance at the calendar is reassuring. Soon the winter chill will fade, and long dormant RVs will be broken out of storage and dewinterized. Yes, camping season is around the corner.

Every year during this time, we begin to receive questions about tires. One of the most popular upgrades one can make to an RV is to get better tires. Tires are not the most fun purchase you’ll ever make in your life. But “peace of mind” has its benefits! Put high quality tires on your RV, and resolve to smile every time you look at them.

We switched our trailer tires from Goodyear ST (Special Trailer) to Michelin LT (Light Truck). This is a controversial move for some in the RV community. In this video, we explain what we chose for our travel trailer and why.

One lousy tire blowout can ruin an RV trip in short order. In the worst case scenario, you lose control of your rig and people die — perhaps including you. We’re all gonna die someday, but I’d rather not be killed by a crappy tire blowout.

But even if you don’t die, your vacation may suffer an untimely demise. A bad blowout can damage your RV, possibly ripping lose propane lines or water plumbing. Sad! And yes, we know people who have suffered this experience.

So the goal with a tire upgrade is to avoid problems, thus allowing you to relax and have more fun.
