Kristy and I are working on a DVD with some tips for fellow RV campers.
Yesterday we shot some video footage at Camping on the Gulf, a privately owned campground on the Gulf of Mexico in Destin, Florida. It’s a well managed campground that in the off season is largely populated by “snowbirds,” those migratory creatures who load up their RVs and head south for the winter. With this sort of winter weather, who can blame ’em?
What makes this campground unique, of course, is location. It’s nestled along a huge swath of beachfront property. The sand in this part of Florida is sugar white and soft. The beaches are just about the best you’ll find anywhere. And the sunsets? Not too shabby either, huh?
We’ve filmed in this area before. It’s sort of our “home away from home,” and we shot one of our most popular videos here: Camping on the Beach.
One of the reasons bloggers blog is the urge to document our daily experiences. Fundamentally, we’re no different that those long ago cavemen who scrawled paintings on the walls. Only now, we use digital video cameras instead of chalk and paint. In any event, I’m pleased we caught the sun before it dipped beneath the waves… 🙂
Nice! Looking forward to the DVD.
Thanks… It will be our first DVD, so I’m sure we have lots to learn. But we are having fun pulling it together. More on this subject soon! 😀
Looks like a place we might stop at around the end of January or early February. We will be leaving the Keys then and heading Westward although not sure how far we will get.
Looking forward to the DVD. Count us in as a purchaser 🙂

Thanks guys, we are near Destin, Florida — it’s in the panhandle. This is a nice area. There’s lots of stuff to do, and in the off-season (now) it’s all left to locals and snowbirds.
In other words, the primary tourist season in this part of Florida (unlike the Keys) is summer. Come here in July & August and it’s slammed with traffic. But come during the off-season and it’s a relatively quiet small community, one with big city amenities. Great restaurants, shopping, and beaches that can’t be beat.
Let us know if you are coming through this area, we’ll meet up!
Sounds good! Hopefully you aren’t away on some fantastic journey when we come through 🙂
Off to The Bahamas (without the trailer) on Saturday morning for a month. Hope we have Internet access!! If you happen to be near Hopetown (Lubbers Quarters) drop by!!

What want’s to look at a nice couple on the beach during a beautiful sunset. UGH come on I want to see what I had to deal with MUD! You turd!!!! I’m just jealous! I got as couple looks on the “moon” tee. I think I need to get another one ti’s a little faded. This would be good for ‘the cuts” all the bloopers sweep them up and have at it!
We love the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area! My parents have a house on Okaloosa Island. The emerald water with the white sugar sand is amazing!
N&M, safe travels to the Bahamas. I like your style! If you have Internet access, post some pics to your blog! I’d like to hear more about your adventures.
With regard to Destin and the panhandle, Kristy has written a little personal guide to the area that we’ve sent to some friends. I’ll see if she’s interested in publishing it here. 🙂
My best friend owns 30A.com, so be sure to check it out for info. (Scenic Highway 30A is located in the heart of the area.)

LOL Matt, sorry to break up the MUD with a lovely beach!
With regard to your shirt, I’m glad to hear it’s getting some good use. I wear one daily. Sales have been pretty good, all things considered! We are running low on our original supply and may need to order some new ones soon.
Mine haven’t faded much at all, which considering my lousy laundry techniques is saying something! I have been known to wash bright red rags with whites on the hot setting… Oops….
Ginny, my brother has a couple of condos on Okaloosa Island – LOVE that area!
I agree with you about the beaches and water — they don’t get much better. The beaches in that part of Florida are softer and cleaner than most, and the water is often warm enough for swimming. If you get a chance, come down in the off-season (autumn or spring) — you get the same benefits with no crowds!
Would love to go in off season, but we’re tied to a school schedule for both the kids and my work…bummer! That’s one of the things we are looking forward to when we retire, seeing sights in a season other than summer. My folks are snowbirds between TX, FL and CO. However we want to stay away from the hassle of stick houses. Our dream is the take the 5er and change location as the mood suits us. I know you once said you worked at Yellowstone. We’d love to travel around volunteering at the National Parks. I’m counting the years til the boys are done with all the schooling. Enjoy this time you have as a couple without a school schedule!
Ginny, with regard to the off season, this weekend’s a perfect example. The weather is 75 degrees and sunny (PERFECT) and there’s a wine festival, a film festival, and all sorts of other stuff happening in the area. Or you can just lounge on the beach. Often you will be the ONLY PERSON on the beach… It’s a little crazy to have that sort of scenery all to yourself.
I hear ya about the school schedules… That will be a challenge for us! I must admit that home schooling is starting to look more attractive… 🙂
I worked in Yellowstone a couple of summers and can’t recommend it highly enough. Yellowstone is drop dead gorgeous… a wildlife watcher’s heaven… a beautiful diverse landscape with enough hiking trails to keep you busy for decades.
Most of the seasonal park employees fall in two camps: college students and retirees. Since you have a 5er you are set. When I worked out there I stayed in the company dorm rooms — they were fun but having your own RV would be preferable.
Being a retired “parkie” would be a satisfying life! You could migrate from park to park and stay as long as it suits you. There’s magic in our national parks that you can’t experience anywhere else.
Our National Parks truly are a “National Treasure”. If you haven’t seen Ken Burns series, you need to. I’ve been to Yellowstone 3 times and stil would love to go again…too many parks to still explore!
Thanks, we will definitely check out the Ken Burns series.
A couple of years ago, while hiking in the Grand Tetons we met a young couple who were attempting to visit ALL of our national parks. It’s certainly a worthwhile goal.
At the end of every year, when we look back, my favorite camping experiences are usually in the parks. This year we made it to Acadia with our Airstream. Next year I think we will head West again…maybe to Alaska!
Here’s a video we did in Yellowstone (back before our Long Long Honeymoon, we tent camped in the park)…
DUDE you Famous man….can I git yo auto graphie! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE15mDRAsws&feature=fvw
Ha! Well, it’s probably not the biggest endorsement deal in history, but it’s a start. 🙂
