From time to time on our spring 2009 tour, Kristy and I are stopping to speak with local media. Our mission: to promote RVing as a fun and affordable way to see our country. If we can do it, you can too!
You don’t have to go for months at a time to enjoy RVing. In fact, you can camp for a weekend and enjoy the same basic benefits that Kristy and I have enjoyed on our Long Long Honeymoon. That’s what most people do.
On this particular occasion, we spoke with Brooke Smith — in our own hometown. If Brooke seems familiar, that’s probably because you’re among the 26 million people who watched her on ABC’s The Bachelor a few year ago. She now hosts her own morning TV show (Daytime Alabama) on NBC WVTM 13 in Birmingham.
Special thanks to Brooke Smith and NBC 13 for the enjoyable interview. I think Brooke is ready to buy an RV for tailgating. 🙂
Very nice and somewhat smooth… but one must consider the wardrobe… and facial expressions… that being said… I think this is the best video we have seen so far and enjoy the clip better than the HGTV one. (Grin)
By the way… we now own a toy hauler. 24 ft Carson. X was miffed off at AS after reading who is sponsoring MM… so she went out and bought it while I was on the road. (AS not that popular now out west… 98% of new RV’s sold out here now are either MH’s and Toy Haulers… big back cargo area.. wow) Going to see what difference it makes before getting rid of the AS. Much more room and more modern appliances. All electric kitchen. No propane except for the heater. Built in 6.5kw water cooled honda genset… quiet as a mouse when going.
Thanks… Yes, I feel we were in our comfort zone with this one. Not bad for a pretty much live interview.
Congrats on your toy hauler purchase. Wow! The missus must’ve really been miffed at Airstream! 😀
Water cooled genset? Now that sounds awesome. I’m sure it is quiet.
The funny thing about RVs… They each have different strengths and weakness, so the definition of “better” may change depending upon your needs.
We LOVE our 25′ Airstream, but we do long for more storage space (my video gear gets strewn all over the place). I’m sure that if we were traveling with children, we might consider something larger.
Really one of my dreams would be a Toy Hauler, but with the rear compartment customized to be a video studio. That would be nice.
Anyway, congrats and keep me posted!
Indeed the cabnet makers are due out tomorrow to see what we can get into the new trailer for the storage of the equipment. Today we put the back down and decided we wanted a screen in area to set outside on the ramp with. Some jacks under the back to keep it stable and a nice awning over the top which will extend out automatically when the ramp goes down. Of course now we can get the 4 wheel exploring beast in the back too instead of trying to put it into the PU.
Much more room… its like overwhelming how much more open space you have. The tire size is the same on the trailer as on the PU also.. thus only a single spare is needed. Bolt pattern is the same as the 3/4 t ford PU. nice….
I am begining to see how the others were saying about it being ADAPTABLE to needs and conditions. However that being said… your right the more you take the more weight your pushing down the road…. so their goes the gas mileage.. grin. … but think of the extra space and payload… wow… almost 7,000 lbs of weight hauling ability. That combind with the PUs 8900 is a whopping payload. If you can get it in the door or bed you should be able to get it down the road.. kinda thing.
Oh ya that gen set is really quite… and they use the hot water that is cooling the engine to heat the secondary in the water heater… which also has a elect element and….. the space heater has a hot water pre heateing radiator in front of it too. But, get this… the hot water heater is one of the new small house types which never run out of hot water…. can you say long hot showers when hooked up to shore power or running the gen set. sweet!!!
And just when you think you have found a new toy… the X handed me a motorhome flyer … with the words on a paste-it saying… what ya think?
Hey its only money… yikes… years ago I could have bought a house for that much… what they gold plate these things.?? Most of the others are already into MH and tow the little off road vehicle behind ’em claim’n that they can park anywhere and the convience of going back into it while crusing down the road… making for good bed sleeping… can’t do that in the trailer… hmmm.
Right now at the work front we are installing aerial cameras for this next adventure shoots. You think you have problems getting the shots … wait till you have to deal with a pilot and a camera man who are akin to putting a cobra with a pith snake in the same cramped box… wow… and if that isn’t enough… digital cameras it seems…..don’ t like the plane vibration so we found out early… something about the camera strobe frequency and the engine/prop vibration rate also don’t work… lot different than using film… grin…
Looking forward to the next shoot… keep up the good work.
GMAs
Hmmm, digital cameras… Do they have CMOS sensors by chance? There’s been a lot of talk online about how most CMOS cameras use a rolling shutter (exposing different portions of the frame at different times) while most CCD-based cameras use a global shutter (exposing the entire frame at once). I’m no expert on the technical details, but the upshot is that CMOS images are more prone to exhibit nasty artifacts like skew or wobble. I saw that some fellow posted a freeze frame from Slumdog Millionaire that had a rolling shutter artifact!
I have a couple of small CMOS HDV cams that we use for car mount type of shots. I’ve found that the Sony cam (with its electronic image stabilization) does better in this high vibration environment than the Canon cams (the Canons have optical image stabilization). So, even though my cams are the cheaper variety, this shows that not all CMOS are created equally with regard to handling vibration.
Oh yeah, my PMW-EX1 pretty much stays on a tripod, safe and sound. I’m not putting that one on a car mount.
I look forward to hearing more about the new toy hauler. Or should I say “new motorhome”? 🙂
We tried to do as well as you two,but we need some work!! Here is our TV debut
Here is the link, sorry!!

Chris, you guys did great! That’s a really nice story. I just posted a Tweet about it.
BTW, congrats on your approaching new arrival! I predict you will enjoy many fun family weekends with your RV… 😀
